Personality Of The Day: Johan Raslan


Dato Seri Johan Raslan was the Executive Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia. He has since retired from PwC and is currently a Senior Advisor.

He is the son of the late Mohammad Raslan Toh Muda Abdullah. Raslan was a chartered accountant from the state of Perak in Malaysia who founded the accounting firm of Hanafiah Raslan & Mohamad ('HRM'). Raslan also founded a number of then government-linked companies (Pernas International Holdings Berhad, Malaysia National Insurance Berhad and Bank Bumiputra (Malaysia) Berhad) and was the first national to be appointed the country's Accountant-General. Johan's grandfather, late Toh Muda Abdullah, was a member of the Malayan Civil Service who became State Secretary of Perak soon after Malaysia's independence. Johan is married with three children.

Johan was in primary school when his father died unexpectedly in a auto accident. Following this, he moved to the United Kingdom and subsequently returned to Malaysia to attend secondary school at the Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur, for three years. He left again for the UK to complete secondary school and university. Upon graduation, he worked at a chartered accounting firm in London for a number of years, during which time he was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales ('ICAEW').

Johan then joined Price Waterhouse London in 1990. He returned to Malaysia in 1992, joining Price Waterhouse. He was admitted as a partner of the firm in Kuala Lumpur in 1993. Price Waterhouse merged with Coopers & Lybrand in 1998, becoming known as PricewaterhouseCoopers ('PwC'). Johan was elected as Executive Chairman of PwC Malaysia in 2004 and was a member of the joint leadership team for PricewaterhouseCoopers Southeast Asia Peninsular. In June 2012, he retired from all executive and leadership positions in PwC

  • Former Chairman of the Malaysian Financial Reporting Foundation ('FRF'), the body which oversees the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board. During his tenure at FRF, the decision was made to converge Malaysian accounting standards with International Financial Reporting Standards by 2012.
